What I Wore: A Weekend with Mom

My mom came down for a visit this past weekend and we had a blast. Since she wasn’t arriving until Saturday morning, Josh and I decided to class it up with dinner on Friday at a hole-in-the-wall diner a locally-born colleague of his raves about. From the outside, we thought it looked a little sketchy, but that turkey cheese burger was just what the doctor ordered. By the time we awoke from our food comas and remembered to take an outfit pic, the bump was out in full effect thanks to a big dinner. We snapped this one in our messy living room with dog and cat toys strewn all about. Forgive me.

The dress is non-maternity from Target. I scored it on the clearance rack for about $10. It has a side slit on the left for a hint of sexy and this night I paired it with a long Theory cardigan I’ve had forever (and the orange patent Coach sandals you see tossed aside behind me). I’m finding cardigans really work, and the shorter ones will be cute later with the bump if I button the top and leave them open above the midsection.

We did not coordinate our pastels, but I kind of love how they relate!

Saturday after we got Mom, we went to one of our favorite spots in DC — a sweet little bistro on 14th called Le Diplomat. All three of us ordered the salad Nicoise (it’s just that good!); they each enjoyed a glass of Sancerre and I had my pregnancy signature drink, a spicy virgin Bloody Mary with extra lemon. I was wearing one of my PinkBlush Maternity finds, the maxi I featured here last week. It’s so roomy you can barely see the bump in it yet, but I know it will be a Godsend in a couple months when I’m huge, and it’s a piece I plan to pass around to my friends when their times come, too. They only have Large left in my color combination, but it comes in a few other options, too — buy it here.

After brunch, Mom and I hit the rooftop pool at our apartment complex. I really wanted to wear a one-piece as I’ve been sunning my tummy a bunch and felt the skin could use a break. But my maternity one-piece from Asos (that is so cute, I can’t deal) is still too big and was gapping in the midsection. Lucky, I have this great one I picked up at Marshall’s a few weeks ago (random brand; orig. $120, I paid $30) that is non-maternity but has ruching all along the tummy and sides for a roomy fit. I felt comfortable and secure in this one and I know it will be cute again next year when things have (hopefully) tightened back up, too.

On Sunday, we did some girly shopping and I wore my favorite skinnies I posted last week with a tight navy V-neck from the Gap outlet (non-maternity; $2.99) and the new shoes Mom bought me. She hates flip flops as much as I do, so in order to rectify my current footwear problem, she purchased me these Kiki flats from J. Crew in the light hyacinth, a full size up from my norm. They’re perfect! I wore them all day as we shopped, lunched, and walked around Bethesda and I couldn’t have been more comfy. They’re like bedroom slippers, but elegant. On sale now in most colors — purchase here.

Hanging up these little outfits on the baby-sized hangers I bought earlier this week was my first true nesting moment. I couldn’t be happier — and it’s worth the weight gain and back pain, I can tell you that much!

I should have had Mom take a full-length of my casual Sunday ensemble, but we were way too busy gushing over baby stuff at Giggle (she bought us two little outfits and helped me make some practical registry decisions). Of course, we had to hit up Neiman Marcus too, though I’ll be waiting till next summer to invest in any chic pieces there!

Despite the teenage-style acne this child has inflicted upon me, I will say I’m pleased with my new, lustrous hair. It’s gotten straighter since I got pregnant and now takes about 10 minutes to dry to perfection. Thanks, Baby!
